BOROUGH COUNCILS.
NEW BRIGHTON. The fortnightly meeting of the Ne £ Brighton Borough Council was held last night; present—The Mayor (Mr R. C. Bishop), Councillors Marshall, Glanville. Owles, Thomson, Rowe, MTntyre and Winny. The Alayor reported that he had received from the Humane Society the medal which had been awarded to Air John Hunt, and that the presentation had been duly made. His Worship thanked the retiring members of the Council for their assistance to him during their term of office. Correspondence was read—From the League of New Zealand Wheelmen with reference to the roads in the borough ; from the Paymaster-General, relative to subsidy payable to tbe borough. The Town Clerk reported—Receipts of rates and dog-tax, =S23 5s 4d; overdraft at the bank, =859 12s (id. The work of formingfootpaths at Richmond Terraco and George Street was approaching completion. The report of the Works Committee was read and approved. It recommended tha o seats should be placed on the esplanade where required. It was resolved to proceed wii.li the metalling of Racecourse and Palmer s Roads. MrW. H. Zouch was appointed collector of dog-tax for the borougn. "Ihe question of appointing a collector of New Brighton rates in Christchurch was referred to the Finance Committee. Upon the motion of Councillor Winny, seconded by Councillor MTntyre, a hearty vote of thanks was accorded to the three members retiring from the Council —Alessrs Marshall, Glanville and Owles. The meeting then terminated.
ASHBURTON. The fortnightly meeting of the Ashburton Borough Council was hold on Monday night ; present—The Alayor, Councillors Hanmer, Paul, Baker, Orr, Bird, Davis and Collins. The Mayor reported the debit balance to be £1623 lbs 4d, and the income since last meeting =235 18s. The Eeturning-Ofiicer reported unopposed return of Alessrs Jhomas, Reid and Davis, and the Alayor welcomed the new members to the Council Board. Councillor Davis was appointed to the seat on the committee vacated by Councillor Brooke and the re-elected Councillors to their'former seats. Accounts amounting to £124 4s were passed for payment, and tne the Council then sat as the Domain Board. The Curator (Air W. W. Smith.) reported the receipt of a number of new roses from Air Graves.
