Messrs Huddart, Parker and Co.’s steamer Tasmania struck a rook off the Mabia Peninsula, between Gisborne and Napier, on Thursday night, and sank in about a couple of hours. The passengers and crew took to the boats, which remained by the' vessel till she disappeared. One boat capsized and two of her occupants, one a passenger and the other a member of the crew, were drowned, but the others made the shore safely. The House of Lords has passed the third reading of the Workmen’s Compensation Bill.
The Earl of Elgin, Viceroy of India, isusing his power to arrest and deport disloyal persons without trial. This action is causing a great sensation throughout the country. Colonel Meiklejohn was able to repel, a tribal attack at Malakand, in the Chitral district, and will assume the offensive when reinforcements arrive. The tribesmen are poorly armed. In connection with the recent, seditious outbreaks in India, two brothers have been arrested at Poona. They were wealthy merchants, and. had long been leaders of secret movements. The prisoners’ property has been attached by the Crown. The natives are intensely excited over, the arrests, and the native papers describe them as more cowardly than murders. It has been officially explained by the authorities at Washington that Great Britain’s occupation of Palmyra Island has existed for nine years. The Marquis Ito, formerly PTeinier of Japan, in the course of an interview, said that the newspapers had exaggerated the differences between America, and- Japan over , Hawaii, and that there was no .cause for uneasiness.
Germany demands that direct international control shall be established over the revenues of Greece, and that an assignment shall be made for the payment to Turkey of interest on the war indemnity. The Ambassadors at Constanfdnople are consulting their respective Governments regarding the demand. The Australian baseball team defeated the London Consolidated team at the Crystal Palace by twenty-one points to eight. ’ The Hon J. G. Ward and Mr Cuthbert Cowan have been nominated for the Awarua seat. The election will take place on Thursday. . The London Emigrants’ Information Office has issued a warning respecting the rush to the new goldfields in British Columbia that the field is open only from June to September, that travelling is arduous, and that provisions are scarce. New Zealand four per cent stock is quoted at 116}, three and a half per cent 108, three per cent 1001The tone of the English wheat market is strong, but prices are vinchanged. The Continental market is" firm, and the American is advancing. ‘
