Mr Duncan M’Dougall, son of Mr J. M’DougaU, an old resident of Lyttelton, yesterday passed his examination as master. The examining officer was Captain Marciel, who complimented the candidate upon the very creditable examination he had passed. Mr M’DougaU, who is in the itlnion Steamship Company’s service, was coached hy Mr B. Hatchwell, of Lyttelton. iMr Hatchwell recentlysubmitted himself for examination in regard to the deviation of the compass, and was successful. The passing of this examination qualifies Mr Hatchwell for the position of a compass adjuster. ; Messrs Pitcaithly, WaUace and-Co. have chartered the brig Maria, now at Wellington, to proceed to Kaipara, for the purpose of bringing the BEuia’s cargo of timber to Lyttelton.
