CHRISTCHURCH. Saturday, June 12. (Before Mr R. Beetharii, S.M.) , Drunkenness. —Mary Bannister was convicted and discharged, and handed over to the authorities of the Samaritan Horne. A Series op Thefts. —Alfred Herbert Allison was charged with having, on June 7, stolen a jacket, value £3 ss, the property of Julia Healy; on June 8, stolen an overcoat, value £4 10s, the property of John M’Naniara; an overcoat, value .£l, the property of Frederick W. Delamaiu; and an overcoat, value £4 10s, the property of Major Steward ; on June 9 an overcoat and a pair of gloves, value M£, the property of W. H. B. Marton, and an overcoat, value £2 10s, the property of Joseph Parkerson. Mr Kippenbergev appeared for the accused, who pleaded guilty. Chief-detective Henderson said that in four out of the six cases the thefts had been from hotels. The accused had only arrived from the north at the beginning of the week, and there was nothing previously known against him. Mr Kippenberger said that, as mentioned by the chief detective, the accused had only reached here at the beginning of the week, and had at once proceeded- to get drunk, and these thefts had been committed while under the influence of drink. In fact, he had been so bad that on Thursday he had had to be remanded for medical treatment. He had no recollection of taking the coats, and, there had been no attempt at concealment, as when arrested he was wearing one coat and had another on his arm. His Worship said he could not overlook the offences, and sentenced the accused to one month’s imprisonment on each charge, the sentences to run concurrently.
