The rain is gradually extending inland. ■A tremendous sea is running at Newcastle, add several vessels, including the barque Liv from Dunedin, had narrow escapes in running for shelter. While .the barque Adderly was being towed in, , the line broke, and at a late hour last night she was drifting along the shore dangerously close to the land. The rocket brigade was following to be ready in case of emergency. • / ....... , • : •* , , April 25. There was heavy rain again last night, and it continues to-day. Encouraging reports, are to hand from the country districts. " The sea continues rough. The barque Adderly, reported in distress off Newcastle, drove ashore during the night oh Stockton beach. She lies high and dry, and the crew walked ashore. She was in ballast from Fremantle. MELBOURNE, April 24. At the request of a deputation from the Council of Churches, the Premier has proclaimed May 2 a day of humiliation and prayer. Eajn and heavy snow have fallen in the Omeo district, the snow in some places being four feet deep.
