AMATEUR SWIMMING ASSOCIATION.
GENERAL MEETING. The monthly meeting of the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association was held at tho Clarendon Hotel last night; present —Messrs E. W. Roper, vice-president (in the chair), W. Jacques, T. Bassett (vicepresidents), H. Frost (Pahiai.ua), W.Tonks and P. W. Johnston (Auckland), A. E. Craddock and G. Milne (Wellington), W. G. Ataek (Napier), L. D. Armitage (Port Ahuriri), A. Francis (Ashburton), 11. L. Armitage, K. Bassett and W. Simpson (Richmond), J. M. Wattson, A. Brabner and G. J. C. Smart (Christchurch), W. Halliday (Otaki), T. Wanchop, A. E. Taylor and H. Brown (East Christchurch), C. Kent (Sydenham), H. L. Dansey (Rakaia), P. D. Kesteven (Geraldine), C. H. Fox (Southbridge), J. Cleary (Lyttelton), F. Truscott (New Brighton), E. O. Duncan (Hutt Valley), E. M. Carr (Christchurch Railway), and Dr Moorhouse (Wanganui). The amateur, status of delegates from Geraldine and Wellington was challenged, and referred to the executive to report, but by thirteen votes to eleven they were allowed to vote at the meeting. It was decided, on the recommendation of the sub-committee, that a black and silver cap with monogram should be given to any amateur swimmer breaking an Association record, and that a certificate should be given to anyone reducing ; a standard. On the motion of Mr E. M. Carr it was decided to recommend the Rules Revision Committee that no person not a member of an affiliated club should he eligible as a delegate to the Association, and that not more than six members of one club should be allowed to act as delegates. Mr K. Bassett moved, and Mr H. L. Armitage seconded —“That it boa recommendation to the Rules Revision Committee that the following be the constitutional rale of the Association defining an amateur swimmer: ‘An amateur swimmer is one who has not, since 1890, swum for a money prize, declared wager, or stake bet, who has not taught, pursued or assisted in the practice of swimming as a means of pecuniary gain, who has not, since tho date aforesaid, knowingly and without protest, taken part in any swimming competition with anyone who is not an amateur swimmer.’ ”
After an animated discussion the motion was lost on a division by fifteen votes to thirteen. Ayes —Messrs K. Bassett, H. L. Armitage, L. D. Armitage, Simpson, Carr, Cleary, Milne, Craddock, Atack, Duncan, Ppx, Dansey and. Kesteven. Noes —Dr Moorhouse, Messrs Frost, Johnson, Tonks, Watson, Truscott, Wauehop, Francis, Jacques, Taylor, Kent (with proxy for W. A. Hall), Brabner, Smart and Halliday.v It was resolved to recommend the Rules Revision Committee to reduce the standard for the plunge competition from 60ft to 50ft, and to eliminate tho long dive from the list of championship events. The Chairman, on behalf of the Canterbury Swimming Clubs, presented Master
H. Wauehop, of tho East Christchurch School, with a gold medal for tho school championship, ho having won all tho tost races.
