LYTTELTON HARBOUR BOARD.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir,—Your correspondent “ Progress,” in his letter which appears in your issue of this. morning,: evidently writes with a very imperfect knowledge of his subject. It will, no doubt, surprise him to learn that the wharfage charges on importations are lower at Lyttelton than at any other portin the colony, and that there is no wharfage payable on transhipments, or on goods landed for reshipment. If goods are landed for Lyttelton or Christchurch, and subsequently reshipped, a declaration clears the exporter from outward wharfage (see By-laws, pages 4-6, 47 and 43, July 22, 1893). The wharfage on general merchandise has, within the last seven’ years, been reduced 25 per cent. Over the excessive railway charges the Lyttelton Harbour Board has, unfortunately, no control. If “ Progress ” will call upon me I shall be glad to give him any farther information in my power.—l am, &0.. PRANK GRAHAM.
