THE HARVEST.
■ Our Temuka correspondent writes : Good progress has been made with the harvesting of early; crops in the Temuka district, and already a number of stacks are up. The crop is ripening patchily, hut the dull weather in the-early part of the week has done much good in keeping hack some of the crops which were maturing too rapidly. A few farmers are threshing oats but of stock, but in a day' or two sufficient grain will be stacked to admit of the mills starting their regular runs. A gentle, shower on Friday will materially help root crops and freshen up the grass ‘ paddocks, which are deplorably dry. Onr Timaru correspondent writes:—The prevailing activity in the harvest fields in South Canterbury received a check yesterday morning, a light rain falling for a few hours. The amount of rainfall, however, was not enough to do either much harm or much good. A good many stacks are now visible on the Levels plains.
