AUSTRALIANS v. THORNTON’S ELEVEN. [Per Press Association.]

LONDON, Sept. 1

Heavy raiu fell during tho morning, completely spoiling the wicket. The home team only made 3 more (Smith 12, Peed not out 13), and the Australians have lost five wickets for 29.

In the first innings of Thornton’s team M’Kibbin took four wickets for 84 runs, Jones four for 72, Giffen two for 58, Trumble none for 55, Trott none for 14.

The scores iu the Australians’ first innings were: Darling 0, Iredale 6, Giffen 13, Donnan 4, Gregory 6, Hill 2, Trott 33, Kelly 21, Trumble 7, Jones 10, M’Kibbin (not out) 6; sundries 8. Total 116.

Hearne took three wickets for 42 runs. Peel 7 for 53, Davidson none for 12, Jackson none for 1.

In the second innings the Australians, who require 176 to save an innings defeat, have lost one wicket for 27. Sept. 2. Despite the wretched weather 5000 people were present at the match. Rain prevented the game being - resumed for a time, and when a start was made the bowlers were almost .unplayable. Darling skied his first ball to mid-on and retired. Hill was dismissed by a marvellous catch by Tunnicliffe at short slip. Trott and Kelly played stubbornly for forty-five minutes lout the latter lost his wicket at 81, and 15 runs were added when the skipper followed, after being at the wickets eighty minutes. THE NEW ZEALAND TOUR. SYDNEY, Sept. 2. Mr Musgrove has replied to the Council’s cable that the team regrets the Council’s action, and unanimously intends to adhere to the New Zealand and Hobart fixtures. Now that the team’s intention is definitely stated, it only remains for the Council to make up its mind what action shall be taken.

SYDENHAM AND ADDINGTON UNITED CLUB. The annual meeting of the Sydenham and Addington United Cricket Club was held last evening, at the Sydenham Chambers. There was a fair attendance of members, and Mr O. Caygill presided. The report stated that the Club’s roll contained the names of eighty-two members. The Club provided cricket for six teams. Although the wins were few, the play af the end of the season showed a marked improvement, the senior team beating the runners-up in tho return game for the Association’s Cup. Negotiations had been opened for a trip to Wanganui and Wellington about Christmas time. The balancesheet showed a credit balance of £6 Os sd. The assets wore <£46 15s 5d and the liabilities .£3l 8s 3d.

The report and balance-sheet were adopted. Mr J. A. Caygill, on behalf of the Committee, presented Mr Jacobs, the treasurer, with a handsome walking-stick.

Five new members were elected. The election of officers resulted as follows Patron, tho Mayor of Sydenham, Mr J. Brown; President, Mr J. Hopper; vice-presidents. Revs E. A. Scott, W. G. Parsonson and T. A. Williams, Drs Diamond and R. W. Anderson, Messrs G. J. Smith, G. T. Booth, W. B. Clarkson, H. D. Carter, J. Forrester and W. E. Munday ; honorary secretary, Mr W. B. Stephens; honorary treasurer, Mr T. Jacobs ; committee, Messrs J. Wright, O. Caygill, J. A. Caygill, A. Lawrence, C. Lalferty, J. Rowe, J. Merriman, J. Davis, W. West, W. J. Walmsley and T. Wiltshire ; auditors, Messrs J. T. Hadfield and 0. Caygill; delegates to the Canterbury Cricket Association, Messrs J. A. Caygill and W. J. Walmsley ; representative on Junior Cup Committee, Mr A. Lawrence ; delegate to the Sports Protection Association, Mr R. Halley; member of Senior Selection Committee, Mr R. Halley. The date of the opening day was left to the Committee to arrange.

After the transaction of some other business, the meeting closed.
