AKAROA COUNTY COUNCIL.
A meeting of this Council was held at the Council Chambers, Duvauchelles, on Saturday: present —Messrs Anson (chairman), Piper, Parkinson, Symes, Hay, White, Mason and Fleming. Correspondence was received from . the ActingController and Auditor , certifying to the balance-sheet for the year ended March 31, 1896. After deciding to call the attention of the Audit Department to the cost of audit, the balance-sheet was adopted. On the motion of Mr Hay, seconded by the Chairman, it was decided to obtain the Crown grants of all the Council’s lands, and to register all deeds and leases in duplicate. It was resolved to sue at once for alb back rates, and to sue one person as a test case in respect of Maori rates. With respect to an application from. Mr Black, of Akaroa, for the County Engineer to prepare specification for a Jetty at Lucas's Bay, the cost of erection to he defrayed out of a loan to be obtained under the Local Bodies Loan Act, it was decided to inform Mr Black that the Council would he willing to entertain his proposals in the event of a legal majority of the Wainui Wharf ratepayers consenting. A slaughterhouse license was granted to Mr S, Nutt, of Little River, subject to the Inspector’s approval. The Council approved' of the action of the Akaroa and Wainui Boad Board in closing a road through Reserve 938 and Reserves 14151 and 13976, Wainui. The Council fixed the valuation on Reserve 1259 at £7 per acre, and' on lots 10 and 11,' Duvauchelles at. £4O per acre. The engineer’s plans for a truss bridge, at Piper’s Creek were approved, ■ and the . construction was ordered to he proceeded with. On the motion of Mr White, seconded by Mr Fleming, it was decided to contribute half the cost of maintenance and construction of all district bridges in the county exceeding 30ft span, if deemed necessary by the County Engineer. It was decided that the Council should he composed of nine members, ■ another member to he given to the Akaroa and Wainui district. Mr Fleming proposed, and Mr Symes seconded—“ That the Council take steps to have the protection taken off hares and quail, and that they be declared vermin in ,the Akaroa County.”
