IPee Press Association.l AUCKLAND, Sept. 1. The Customs revenue for August, 1895, was £33,495-; for 1896, £53,762. The latter is the highest total yet received for any one month at Auckland. ' The Colonial Sugar Company, Limited, announces that it has reduced the price of its sugars . to-day £1 per ton, syrup and treacle in bulk 10s, in cases Is per case. At the inquest on Allan Scott, of Paterangi, it transpired that he was greatly worried over the banking inquiry. He was a shareholder in the Colonial Bank. A life-buoy marked “ S.s. Anglian, Melbourne,” was picked up at Anchor Beach, Takatu Point, opposite Kuwait, on Saturday. A canister of phosphorus which was attached was unbroken, but bore marks of an attempt to puncture it at the places provided for the purpose. Nothing was broken about the buoy or its fixings, and everything pointed to its having been ' thrown overboard for a purpose. At the Police Court Sydney William Buck, licensee of- the Ponsonby Club Hotel, was fined £3 and costs for selling liquor after hours. Referring to some evidence in the case, MrNorthcroft reminded Buck that it was a mistake for publicans to think, because they had not received notice from the Court, that they were not liable for selling liquor to prohibited persons. As soon as the fact of a person being prohibited was brought under their notice they were liable.
