AKAROA.
[Prom Our Correspondent.] The usual fortnightly meeting of the Akaroa Borough Council was held on "Wednesday; present the Mayor and Councillors Taylor, Heath, Chappell, Penn, Munro and Harrison. Correspondence was read from the Government Life Insurance Department, requesting details of the proposed sinking fund for repayment of loan. The Clerk was -instructed to reply. It was resolved to call for tenders for carting and wharf lighting, to be in by next meeting. Tho financial statement showed the receipts since last meeting to , have been £G 19s lOd. The accounts presented for payment amounted to £22 2s 3d. The credit balance at the bank was £llO los. The Mayor reported that the Muter Street contract was finished, and moved that the money should be paid. After discussion the motion was carried. The Clerk was empowered to order tar for asphalting when 1 required. The tender of Mr E. F. Lelievre for metalling Jolie Street was accepted. A meeting of the Domain Board was then held, the same gentlemen being present. Mr Jolly wrote, agreeing to retain his office as caretaker. Accounts amounting to £5 19s 9d were passed for payment. ■ On Thursday night a very good concert was given in the Oddfellows’ Hall by the Football Club, in aid of their funds, and despite the inclemency of the weather there was a good attendance. Songs and musical selections were given by Mesdames Harrison, Laiug and Lelievre, Misses Vangioni, Haker and Nicholls, Dr Laing, Messrs Vangioni and Brown. The second part was taken by the “ Kentucky Minstrels,” who were very good in their songs and jokes, local and otherwise. An amusing farce brought an enjoyable evening to a close. The Domain Tennis Club gave a most successful ball on Friday last in the Oddfellows’ Hall, which had been tastefully decorated with ferns, flags, &c., by the lady members of the club, ■who also provided a recherche supper and the music. About thirty couples were present. Dancing was kept up until 3 p.m., it being voted by all to have been the most enjoyable ball of the season. After a spell of fine spring 'weather, a change came on Wednesday, there being a heavy fall of snow, followed by rain fur the last two days. The sudden change will prove very trying for the lambs, of which there are already a good number on the Peninsula. On Saturday a football match was played on the Recreation Ground between the local club and Little Akaloa, the former winning by six points (two tries gained by Hemingway and Buchanan) to nil.
