CHRISTCHURCH. Saturday, August 29. (Before Mr R. Bectham, S.M.) Drunkenness. —For this offence Bridget Machin was fined 10s, in default fortyeight hours’ imprisonment. Charles Stratford was fined ss, with the same alternative. Vagrancy. —James Ryan alias Michael Ryan alias Johnstone was charged with being an idle, disorderly person, without visible lawful means of support. Evidence was given by Detectives Maddern and Marsack to the effect that the accused did no work, associated with thieves and other had characters, and frequented a Chinese den. The accused, who had a bad record, was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment with hard labour. A Series or Charges.— Charles Stratford was charged with having, on August 29, used obscene language in Linwood, with having assaulted Anthony Hurst, and with having broken a pane of glass, value 10s, the property of Anthony Hurst. The accused, who pleaded guilty, was ordered to he imprisoned till the rising of the Court for using obscene language, was fined 40s for the assault, and ordered to pay the value of the broken window, and also the costs incidental to the proceedings.
