Writing to the chairman of the honorary staff of the hospital, the Premier says “The staff complains of imputations against it. This complaint is sought to be justified by my words ‘ Talking about doctors, reminds me of death, which they are so intimately associated with, although it is said that kind earth covers the mistakes of doctors to a greater extent than the mistakes of other men/ These remarks are simply an elaboration of a trite saying, and were used jocularly. Nothing was further from my thoughts than to seriously reflect on the profession.” With regard to the expression about Dr Way, the Premier says that though he was provoked, it was not one he ought to have used, and he cheerfully withdrew it.
