PROPOSED MUSICAL FESTIVAL.

The scheme initiated by the committee’ of the Christchurch Musical Union hasi, ’ been warmly taken up by a portion of the' '• musical public of Christchurch. A largely- ,’ attended meeting of the committee of’ the. Union was held yesterday afternoon, Mr A.’ Kaye, one of the vice-presidents^,being ia. the chair. Mr Garrard, the hon secretary.- , reported the result of the circulars issued; to subscribers And the general : public,; showing that a most satisfactory return’ had been received. Of the £3OO guarantee; required £230 had already been subscribed 1 , - and a large number of the Union sub-; ■Bribers and the musical public had . also' intimated their intention of supporting.tbe. project shou’d it be' put into force. Letters were read from Messrs Tondall and' Walls expressing their full sympathy with the proposal and their desire to assist iir making ie a success.’ After full discussion • it was resolved—'“ That the replies received from guarantors being considered ~■ sufficiently satisfactory, the project*'!)®gone on with, and thsit a sub-committee, of the Union be appointed,-with power to act, for the purpose of inviting the cp-opota-" 1 ■ tion of and conferring, with the Mdtetb--and kindred societies to discuss and decide'., on a plam of joint action.” Thia' jbint ' committee will shortly meet, and it - now. rests with the public who have not yet, replied to the circular to the, project by Sending' in their names either,, as g narantors or subscribers, pr both.
