Business Mottoes. THE BOOT TEADE DIFFICULTY. AS there are many rumours afloat with reference to the above, all void of truth, we should like the public to know the true facts of the case, which are as follows: — When we found that the members of the Federated Bootmakers’ Union and the Boot Manufacturers’ Association could not agree at their late Conference we anticipated trouble, and as we were not consulted in the matter, but would have had to agree with whatever they liked to impose on us, we held a conference with our men without consulting the Union —(this is where the shoe pinches) —and we agreed that for the next nine years we would stick together, the men to receive wages ranging from £2 to £3 per week, thus avoiding all strikes or lockouts with us for the next nine years, and the Union object to it. Agreements were drawn up and stamped and signed by all parties concerned. The men are perfectly satisfied, and so are we. When the Union heard of these agreements, they called the menout on strike and only two re-ponded, and when they found the remainder would not go out they started bombarding tile town with handbills, and, in consequence, a crowd gathered round our premises, our customers were insulted, stones thrown, windows broken, and generally the crowd behaved in a most disgraceful manner. Of course, the Union will deny having done these tilings, but we contend that they were the instigators, and are, in consequence, morally responsible for the rowdyism, had language, and bootings whicli took place on Saturday night. For the benefit of the public, our factory will he open for inspection for the next three months, and anybody feeling an interest therein will be shown over the building and the working explained by one of the firm. If those ladies and gentlemen who were intimidated or insulted on Saturday night outside our premises will kindly send us their names and addresses, or will favour us with a visit, we shall feel obliged to them. A reward of £2 will he paid by us to anybody who will give such information as may lead to the conviction of the person or persons who threw the stones outside our premises, thereby hitting a lady on the head and breaking panes of glass.
