LORD BRASSEY.

SPEECH AT ALBAN ST. [Special to Press Association,] ALBANY, Oct. 17. Lord Erassey was entertained at a banquet. In referring to Imperial defence, he said it was quite clear to his mind that the share of Australia in defence would be of a local character, and if aha attended to this to a greater extent than was already done by the local navy, it was all that she could possibly be expected to do. In joining the Imperial Federation League it was never his view that they should endeavour to get the colonies to give greater pecuniary assistance to defence, and he believed that the public feeling in the Old Country was that whatever might be the future development at the present time it would be unwise and was uncalled for to make any attempt to inincrease the contributions. He had come to the conclusion that the Imperial Federation League should cease to exist, f \ there was now no need of anybody to stir up sympathy for the colonies. His Excellency then referred to hia estate near here, and said General Booth desired to use it as an oversea colony; but after consideration he had decided not to accede to the request, as it was not a good thing for a young country to have some hundreds of people not of the best class as colonists dumped down within it.
