CHRISTCHURCH. • i Wednesday, July 17, (Before Mr R. Westenra, J.P., and Mr J. Brown, J.P.) Charges of Larceny.-— Michael Connelly was charged with having, on or about .July 15, at Christchurch, stolen an overboat, value 30s, and a covert coat, value 15a, the property of Tindal Webster. Accused pleaded not guilty, and elected to be dealt with summaiily. The evidence for the prosecution showed that the prosecutor left the two coats on a peg in the passage of the White Hart Hotel on Saturday last. He missed them on the following Monday. He identified the covert coat produced aa his property. The coat was found by Detective Maddern at the hack of the Cayeraham Hotel, where accused had had a shakedown. The accused, who was arrested by Detective Marsaok, claimed the covert coat as his property and said ha bought it two years ago at Timaru. Accused denied having been in the White Hart Hotel, but the licensee, Mr Neill, said the man came into the hotel on Saturday last and wanted to cash a cheque. Accused went to Mr Bowman’s ’ shop on, Tuesday and wanted to sell a coat. He was then wearing the coat produced. Accused was convicted and sentence rias deferred, pending the hearing of another charge. Accused was then charged with having on July 16 stolen an overcoat value 40s, the property of J. G. Arnold. Accused pleaded not guilty. The evidence for the prosecution in this case showed that the prosecutor left his coat in the White Hart Hotel on Tuesday, and missed it at 9. a.m. that day. The coat produced belonged to prosecutor. The accused tried to sell it at Mr Bowman’s shop for £l. Accused, in' reply to the usual caution, said he had nothing to say. He was sentenced to one month’s imprisonment on each charge. Assault.— John Herriott pleaded not guilty ;to a charge of having, on July 6, at, St * Albans, assaulted bis daughter, Elizabeth Herriott, by striking her on the face with hia band. On the date in question tho acoused had an altercation with his daughter in his, house and struck her a severe blow.' Her face was swollen for sometime afterwards. Accused admitted striking, hie daughter; but said she gave him great provocation. He did not intend to hurt her. The Bench said accused had no right to strike his daughter in such a manner, and he* would be fined 20s and costs 7s.

LYTTELTON. Wednesday, July 17.' (Before Mr H. W. Bishop, S.M.) Civil Cases.— J. W. Smith and Co. v. H. Bennett, claim £6 6s 6d; E. Forbes and Co. v. W. Harper, £4 17s; same v. A. Shadbolt, £3 Os Id, In each of the above cases judgment was given for the plaintiff by default. TEMUKA. Tuesday, July 16. (Before Major Eeddell, S.M.) Snowballing.— Five young men were charged with this offence, and fined 5s each with 7s costa. Maintenance. Michael Spillane v. Mary Spillane and others. Mr Salmond for complainant; Mr Raymond for defendants. In the evidence it was proved that the defendants had no private property, and were nob in a position to pay anything for the complainant’s support. The case was dismissed. Disturbing the Salvation Army.— Richard Sharp was charged with riding through the Army when holding a meeting

in the street. The offence was proved, and be was fined 10a and 9a costs.

Civil Cases. — Judgment by default, with 23s costs, was given in Quinnesa and Le Cren v, John Grant, claim £i7 3s 3d.—■ 1)., Taylor v. Mrs Brosnabsn, claim £l3 2s 6d, foe dishonoured promissory note. Mr Raymond for plaintiff. Judgment was given for amount claimed, with costs SOs and 21s solicitor’s fee.
