BOARD OF EDUCATION.

A meeting of the North Canterbury Boaid of Education was held yesterday ,morning; \prcsent—-Messrs H. W. Paryman, T. W. Adams, J. TV. Sawle, J. Mannings and f J. Rennie. In the temporary absence of the chairman, Mr Peryman was voted to the chair. Mr B. Weatenra arrived later on and took the chair.

The Secretary road a statement of assets and liabilities to date, showing that the assets were £2290, and the liabilities £5581, leaving a debit balance of £3291. Tho Buildings Committee reported that, at its meeting on July 16, a statement of the buildings account, made up to date, had been submitted showing that, after receipt of the £IOOO lately advanced, there was an excess of liabilities to the amount of £443. A letter had been received from the Lyttelton Borough Council giving six months’ notice of the termination of the agreement to allow the use of the Colonists’ Hall for school purposes. , It was decided to call for alternative tenders (stone and wood) for the renewal of the fence supporting the bank-at tho West Lyttelton school. The following tenders were-accepted r—iLoburn, repairs, Q. Duggan £34 15b; Prabbleton, repairs, A. Tweedia £46 10s; Southbrook, repairs, J. Withers £43. Several small applications were granted, some were refused, and some were referred to the Clerk of Works for his report. . The report was adopted, On the recommendation of' the committee, Mr J. Boag, juu., was appointed on the Brookside School Committee. The Canterbury Caledonian Society wrote asking whether candidates for the society’s scholarships would ba allowed to sit for examination with candidates for the Board’s scholarships. The request was granted. Miss Craddock was appointed to the Brookside school; Miss Constance Andrews was appointed to the Hampstead school; and Miss J. M’Hraifch was appointed sewing mistress at the Summerhill school. It was decided to appoint a second pupil-teacher to the New Brighton School. The Board then went into committee, and on. its resuming the proceedip.gs.tpr-. minated.
