COUNTY COUNCILS.

CHEVIOT. Tho Cheviot County Council met at tbe Land Office, Mackenzie, on July 6; present—Councillors P. T; Gell, G. W. Forbes and B. C. Smith. In the absence of the Chairman, who was detained at Waipara by the floods, Councillor Gell was voted to the chair. A letter was read from the Colonial Secretary, informing the Council that tho New Zealand Gazette would be forwarded to it free of charge. The Manager of the Bank of New Zealand wrote asking for signatures of Councillors authorised to sign cheques on tho banking account. It was resolved that the Clerk to the County Council should be, appointed treasurer, and that Councillors j‘ Gibson and G. W. Forbes and the Treasurer should be authorised to sign cheques on behalf of the Council. The consideration of the question of licensing vehicles was postponed until the next meeting. On the motion of Councillor G. W. Forbes, seconded by Councillor B. C. Smith, Mr J. Nicholson was appointed poundkeeper for the County of Cheviot. Tho Clerk was instructed to make inquiries as to the cost of having a poundkeeper’s notice board, with table of fees, prepared, pursuant to the Impounding Act, and to put the matter in hand at once if the price was reasonable. It was resolved that the account of election expenses sent in by Mr Max. Whatman, returning-officer, should be passed as correct, and that the Clerk should be instructed to forward it to Wellington. The Clerk was requested to obtain designs for a common seal for the Council. AMURI, The ordinary meeting of the Council was held at the Council office, Culverden, on July 6; present—Messrs D. Rutherford (chairman), D. D. Macfarlane, J. H. ■Davison, W- Thomson, F. H. Wilson, A. Macfarlane and P. S. Northcote. The Chairman reported that since last meeting the following correspondence had been received From the Under Secretary for Lands and Surveys, informing the Council that the Government would be prepared to appoint a commissioner to apportion 'what adjoining local bodies were to pay towards the coat of maintenance of the Lower Waiau bridge, if ihe Council would indicate what other local bodies were in its opinion interested in the bridge, and what they should pay towards the cost of maintenance. From Mr Acton-Adams apologising for absence from the meeting, as he had not quite,recovered from the effects of an accident. The labour gang had been employed during tbe month in repairing the culvert serosa the North Road near the Coldstream, in blinding the newly shingled portion of the Hammer Plains Road near Mouse Point, and in filling in with shingle the ruts aud darning bad places along the Gorge Road. Two men had also been employed since June 21 in making protective works on the south bank of the Waiau river, near, the Lower Waiau bridge. The receipts for the month ware—Rates .£314 14s 6d and hotel license fees £365. There was a balance to the credit of the County fund account of £748 la 9d, of the waterrace account £37 8a and of the Government loans to local bodies account £384 J|s Gd. It was resolved —• “ That the ■fmjdkoura and Cheviot County Councils be to, asking them what proportion they would be willing to pay towards the cost of maintenance of the Lower Waiau bridge.” " That Mr G. W. M’Rae be written to, asking his permission to exchange the old road from Hurunui to Tekoa for the present road, leading from Tekoa to Balmoral railway station.” “ That the balance of the purchase money be paid for the land taken from Mr W. 0. Rutherford for water-race purposes.” “ That tho Clerk take out a fresh insurance policy on the Council property.” “That the Overseer have a few loads of shingle put on the road leading into Lyndon Station.” The tenders, of. Mr George Mitchell for £4O for widening the Conway cutting, and of Mr W. Bruce for excavating trenches at the Waiau, Pahau and Hurunui Rivers i for willow planting, at 3s 6d per chain, were accepted. Mr C. P. Hugonin, manager of the Culverden Estate, waited on the Council and submitted plans and specifications for constructing a branch watar-raca commencing at a point in the Council’s main race near Countess Creek and running through a portion of the Culverden Estate. . Permission to make the race was granted, and the question of the Council’s liability to contribute towards the construction of the race was deferred. After passing accounts and transacting some routine business the meeting closed.
