ASHLEY ROAD BOARD.
TO THE EDITOR. Sib, —I would like through your.columns to ask the members of the Ashley Road Board their reasons for returning to a certain contractor hiS deposit after having failed to carry out his contract. At the commencement of winter a number of shingling contracts were let in this district. A deposit of 5 per cent has to be lodged by each contractor as a guarantee that he will carry out the work if his tender is accepted. Two of the successful tenderers in this instance threw up their contracts, thus putting the Board to the trouble and inconvenience of haying to relet the work. And instead of having the shingle put oh the roads at. the commencement of winter, when it is most needed, the winter will be nearly over before the work is commenced. And now at its last meeting the Board, for. some reason only known to the members, has thought fit to return to one of these contractors his deposit. I would like to ask why this particular contractor was shown more favour than the other, or those who have lost their deposits at other times Surely a public body should treat all alike, not make fish of one and flesh of another.— lam.&c., FAIR PLAY.
