THE TREASURER’S EXPLANATION.
The report of the speech delivered by the Colonial Treasurer in the House of Representatives last night did not reach ua until four o’clock this morning. We gather, however, by a very hurried glance at the figures quoted by Mr Ward that the sums held in London to the credit of the colony at the time of his address to the Chamber of Commerce were as follow; — £ Consolidated stock debentures 1,306,100 Guaranteed debentures... ... 800,000 Other debentures ... ... 53,400 Eemittsnce drafts 390,000 Cash 272,715 Deposit receipts 150,000 Drafts ... 105,000 JE3,077.215 The total, it will be observed, ia actually in excess of the “three millions ” mentioned by the Colonial Treasurer, and although we are compelled to defer a closer analysis of his figures, w© can at once congratulate Mr Ward upon the triumphant vindication of hia integrity.
