ROMAN CATHOLIC PROCATHEDRAL.
Yesterday, Pentecost Sunday, Pontifical High Maes was celebrated at the proOathedral, Barbadosa Street, at 11 o’clock, by hia Grace Archbishop Kedwood, assisted by the Very Eev Father Dovoy, S.M. V.G. (Wellington), and the Very Eev Dr "Watters, S.M. (President of St Patrick’s College, Wellington) as deacons at the throne, the Eev Fathers Harnane, S.M., and Galeme, deacon and sub-deacon, respectively, of the mass, and the Very Eav Father Cummings,' S.M., V.G., assistant priest. His Lordship Biahop Grimes occupied a seat in the sanctuary. The music of tho mass was Mozart’a No. 1, with the Credo from Gounod’s.“.Mess© Solennelle.”and was sung by an efficient choir. The principal solos were taken by Mias Jacques (soprano). Miss Annie Hayward (alto); MrNaughton (tenor), Messrs Hynes and Cunningham (bass). Miss Hayward’s singing of the Agnus Dei ” was very good'. The hymn “ Veni Sancte Spiritus,” as appropriate to the occasion, was also sung. Misa Funston presided at the organ, and Mr G. Cronin conducted. At three o’clock in the afternoon tho spacious church was crowded in every part, when his Grace tho Archbishop imparted the sacrament of confirmation to one hundred and fifty candidates, boys and girls, and about twenty adults, prior to which he_ delivered an impressive address of half-an-h aur’s duration, hearing upon the sacrament he was about to administer, and directed principally to the recipients thereof. Mr E. O’Connor acted as sponsor for the male candidates, and Mrs Strata in a like capacity for the opposite sex. Suitable hymns were rendered by the choir, including “ Faith of Oar Fathers,” as the procession of clergy passed out of tho church. In the evening Pontifical Vespers were celebrated, presided over by his Grace Archbishop Redwood, who afterwards preached a powerful sermon on the subject, “ The Descent of tho Holy Ghost with its Sanctifying Grace.” The church was crowded to excess. Kanewal of baptismal vows, by the -newly-confirmed, consecration and other attendant ceremonies followed, after which solemn procession and benediction of the Most Blessed Sacrament terminated tho ceremonies tf tho day. After the benediction. Bishop Grimes thanked the- Archbishop, Dr Watters and the Very Eav Father Devoy for the encouragement given by their visit.
