The winter meeting of the Canterbury Trotting Club was held yesterday under favourable conditions, exoept that the course was rather heavy in a good part of the circuit. There was a large attendance including many ladies—on whose behalf earnest wishes were expressed for the speedy erection of a grand stand. : The greater part of the spectators, also, could get only an occasional glimpse of the horses while a race was in progress. A roost excellent luncheon catered by Mr Boggey, and good music by the Christchurch Band, added greatly to the enjoyment of a very pleasant afternoon. The stewards ware called upon early in tho day to decide as to the identity of Wildwood, and, later on, his age; also to consider an inconsistency in the recent performances of Berlin Maid. In each case it was decided that no interference by the (stewards was called for, but the time lost cost tho club a substantial sum in totaiisator returns, the Birthday Handicap having to be started before half of the spectators had made their investments. Notwithstanding this disadvantage, the satisfactory total of £3446 10s was passed through the totaiisator during the day. A complaint was made to the stewards that a ton - shilling ticket was rung on the totaiisator during the first race, some time after the start. Messrs Hobbs and Goodwin explained that on checking the number of tickets sold with, the numbers on the ■ totaiisator it was found that a ticket short had bean registered, and the rectification of this error was what was complained of. Several first-class performances were made, as tho times recorded will show. Tho successes of Mr W. Jardiu’s horaos. Viking and Kentucky, wore very popular, and Starr ro-, ceivad hearty cheers and many congratulations on tho results of his training and driving. Viking’s smin 14Eeo constitutes the two-mile record for a stallion in harness for New Zealand. The performances of Pearl in the Addington Handicap, Josephine in the Birthday Handicap and Imperious in the Dash Handicap wore also deservedly cheered.
