THE BOYS’ HIGH SCHOOL.
The enlargement of the Boy;/ H'gli School, now in progress, will very greatly enhance the effectiveness of the arrangements at that institution, and will materially facilitate the work, especially in the department of scientific instruction. The addition will consist of a wing on tho north-west coraer of the present building, extending towards Canterbury College, and having a frontage to Worcester Street of 45 feat, with a depth of 31 feet. It is to ba constructed of blue stone, with facings of Oamaru stone, and will he uniform in style with the existing building. Tho basement will contain a largo chemical laboratory with cloven sinks and other fittings, a dark room for photographic work, and a shoreroom for tho apparatus and appliances used in the teaching of physics. On the ground floor will be a lecture theatre, 43 feet long by 27 feat in width, with four rows of scats and desks, arranged on a polygonal plan. Each succeeding row is to be raised above those in front, so that every pupil will have an uninterrupted view of tho instructor. Toe musier s table wil! bo fitted with a chemical sink and gaifittings for. use in demonstration. Behind this table are to bo two large blackboards each 11 feet long by 4 feet wide, counterpoised, so that they can ba run down in order to expose an expanse of white wall, on which magic lantern views are to he projected. It may ba. explained that these views will be exhibited in connection with the teaching of geography, science and other Gubj?e"s included in the school syllabus. The tfccatra wiil accommodate eighty boys for drawing or writing lessons, or about one hundred and twenty for lectures. It is to bo lighted with four two-light windows, fitted with shutters for the purpose of darkening the room when the magic lantern is in use. On the uppar floor will be two class - rooms, each 27 feet 8 inches by 21 feet 2 inches. One of there, which adjoins the present large lecture-room, ia to ba fitted with wooden self-coiling shutters, so that it can ho thrown into one with tho latter. All the rooms will be provided with municipal grates, and opeeial care has been taken to ensure satisfactory ventilation. The new rooms will be finished iu the same stylo as the present ones, with plas lured walls and ceilings and dados of native woods. The are Messrs Collins and Harman, and the contractor Mr Alexander Clephane, who baa undertaken to finish the construction by Oct. 31.
