The remedial effects of laughter are really wonderful. Oases have been known where a hearty laugh has banished disease and Reserved life by a sudden, effort of Nature. An. aged lady complained to a London magistrate that because she was a little behind with her rent her landlady followed her to her church and asked her for rit there. The landlady came into the pew alongside her, and when she was joining in ths responses, was constantly whispering to her about the rent. When it came to the response “incline our hearts” the ■landlady would add "to pay our rent.” The magistrate said it was very annoying, but there was nothing illegal in it. The "new woman ” asserted herself in a very pronounced way at a Nonconformist marriage in South London recently. The bride, tho daughter of a wealthy Nonconformist, refused to be " given away.” This form is clearly a survival of the time when the woman was regarded as a chattel, first to her father and then to her husband, and the lady declined to , recognise, it. She gave herself away, and her father stood by as a spectator. Affctr this, though, she undertook to love and honour her husband, aha declined to promise to obey Mb'. ',
