SWIMMING.

A meeting of representatives (the Presidents and Yice-presidenta) from the various swimming clubs was held last evening at the Clarendon Hotel, to consider what steps should be taken to entertain the visitors who are competing at the swimming meetings to be held here. There was a good attendance, and the chair was occupied by the Mayor of Christchurch. Mr G. J. C. Smart, local Consul of the New Zealand Swimming Association, submitted an entertainment programme, which had. been drawn up at a meeting of delegates. The programme was adopted. After some discussion it was resolved, on the motion of Mr Eopar, seconded by Dr Moorbouse—“ That it be a recommendation to the clubs that the takings at each meeting be used as follows:—(1) The expenses of prizes and advertising and other charges; (2) the balance to be handed to the Treasurer of this meeting, the first charge on these balances to he the expense of entertaining the visitors, lathe event of deficiency the four clubs to pay £3 each; if. after this contribution from the clubs, there should still be a deficiency, the amount shall be made good by the guarantors. In the event of a profit being made after all expenses axe paid, the amount shall be divided in proportion to the sum paid by each club to the general fund. The expanses of each meeting shall, not include the cost of privately-contributed prizes.”

The annual race meeting of the Bast Christchurch Amateur Swimming Club, to be held at the Lancaster Park bath on Saturday afternoon, •will be an epoch in the history of swimming in Canterbury as the occasion of the first appearance of Australian representatives in Christchurch. Besides the 220yds Championship, there are tan club and intefclub events, for all of which good entries have been received. All distances up to 220yds have been put on the programme, and all styles of natation arc provided for- There are over one handed and twenty competitors for the different events, and fine weather only is needed to make the most important swimming meeting yet held here also the most enjoyable. Messrs Hoey, Bailey and Brigham, the three Auckland competitors, arrived by the Takapuna yesterday morning, and were mot at the station by several swimming enthusiasts and driven to the Clarendon Hotel. Mr H. H. Dacre, the Wellington representative, leaves there to-day to compete in the championship events. The Sydney, competitors will arrive either on Friday night or Saturday morning, in time to compete at the East Christchurch Club’s meeting at Lancaster Park. In another column will be found full particulars of tbe Thursday afternoon meeting. The programme is very attractive.

A fifty - yards junior handicap was decided at the Christchurch Club’s bath last evening, before a good number of spectators. The following is the result: — First heat, J. Thomas; second heat, C. Bundle j third heat, J. F. Duncan ; fourth heat, J. Thompson j final heat, J. Thompson.

A 50yds Handicap Race was held at the Sydpaham bath . last.. evening, for Messrs Caygill and Cobeldick’a prizes. The following are results: —First heat—H. Gee 16seo, 1; W. Shoard; 7£jec, 2. Second heat—H. Morgan 7see,' 1; G. Bell 3sec, 2. Third heat—A. Kent Ssec, 1; E. Day losec, 2. Fourth heat—A.' Russell 2sec, 1; G. Hurst 6aec, 2. ' Fifth heat— W. A. Hall 4sec, 1; W. Batts 7eec, 2. Sixth heat—T.. Cotterill sor, 1; G. Coboldiok 3sec, 2. Final heat—T. Cotterill acr, 1; W. Betts 7sec, 2. H. Gee and A.

. Euasell also started. Won easily. Time—39sec. Messrs J. A. Caygill and Q. T. Booth were handicapper and starter respectively. A meeting of the committee of the Sydenham Amateur Swimming Club was held on Tuesday evening; present Messrs Caygill (in the chair), Kent, Denham, Dowding, Betts, Howison and W. A. Hall (honorary secretary). It was resolved, after discussion, to hold the Polo Championship on March 16, in connection with the annual sports at Lancaster Park. A programme was drawn up, and a number of donations were received.

A meeting of the committee of the Eichmond Amateur Swimming Club was held on Tuesday; present—Messrs H. L. Armitage (in the chair), C. S. Howard, W. Simpson, A. S. Andrews, F. Ward, G. Stevenson and K. Baaaett. Messrs C. Butcher, F. Shand and four ladies were elected members. It was decided to enter for the Plunge and Long Dive championships, The captain reported that the polo team was doing good work. On Tuesday evening Hawker’s Hall, New Brighton, was well filled with residents, including several ladies, to witness the presentation of prizes won at the Saturday race meeting. Mr E. C. Bishop, president, made the presentations. Mr H. E, Walker, the captain, was accorded a special vote of thanks for having performed the duties of secretary and other offices at the club’s inaugural meeting,
