THE WOOL SALES.

The wool sslea hold in Christchurch yesterday wero satisfactory in many ways. The large attendance and the heavy catalogues showed that though the present value of wool is low, the importance of the local market is fully recognised by both buyers and sellers,* while the proportion of the wool that was sold, and the prices that were obtained, suggested that, in moat descriptions, the lowest point of an unprecedentedly low rang© of prices has been touched. The various woollen mills, the local wool-scourers and the Home and Continental dealers and manufacturers were well represented, and all shared in the competition for wools suited to their respective requirements. There was no startling rebound in the prices; tbs descriptions which, are selling with least difficulty in England made the best proportionate prices here, and the class that appears to have suddenly dropped out of favour in England—wools of the fast cross with tho merino—were correspondingly neglected. Itmnst b© said that many of the l clips offered, including some that were, a few years ago, held in the highest esteem, have fallen off greatly in quality and other points, and do not afford a fair comparison between past and present prices; but taking the wool all round, the present average price is 25 per cent below that obtained last season, How that the turning point hag, to all appearance, been passed* we ms? hope that a steady improvement will ensue.
