Captain Smith, of the s.s. Taviuni, says there is no truth in the statement that his vessel was nearly ashore at Fiji daring the recent hurricane. The Tavidni was about two hundred miles south of Fiji on her trip from Auckland when she encountered the hurricane, and he hove-to for eleven hours. The Ohau had a narrow escape from going ashore, and there has possibly been some confusion between the name of the island of Taviuni (which was devastated) and that of tho steamer. Bluff, Jan. 25.
