DUNEDIN NEWS .
[Pks Peess Association.! DUNEDIN, Oct. 25. At the Police Court to-day, Nasood Merae was charged with taking goods from the Wakatipu without their having passed the Customs. The accused, who is an Assyrian, had been in business in New South Wales. He arrived by the Wakatipu, and two cases of goods which he had were carefully examined, and a watch was kept on the man. Subsequently it was found that he had a number of watches and a quantity of silk goods, and'these, it was presumed, had been taken ashore in a portmanteau. Mr Carew fined the accused 4100, bub afterwards reduced it to 450. The Harbour Board to-day declined to reconsider the case of Captain Stewart, who, after being in charge of Dredge 222 since she was built, has been retired. The letter of explanation was simply received. At the annual meeting of the Women’s Franchise League, Mrs Hatton, the president, in her report, stated that there was a surplus for the year. She said that matters affecting the purity of home life and the safety of girls had bean treated in Parliament by a w&ufc of earnestness only too characteristic of male politicians. The League had set its face against the introduction of women into Parliament ; yet, if these highest inceptions of political life were kept in the background, while members increased their own and proposed additions to Ministerial salaries, the day would soon come when women would insist at the ballot-box on direct personal representation of their sex. It would appear inevitable that women must insist on legislation that would equalise the differences between male and female workers. Were they not justified in demanding that equal pay should in every case accompany equal service P Mrs Hatton said it was now seen that the friends of temperance, with the help of women, could beat the liquor traffic. Lady Sicut and Mrs Hatton were elected presidents, and Mrs Dick and Mrs Earnshaw vice-presidents. The services of Mrs Hatton and Miss Nxcol (late secretary) were recognised by a presentation to eacn of a tea and coffee service.
