AUCKLAND NEWS.

[Per Press Association.] AUCKLAND, Oct. 19.

The Board of Education has decided, on legal advice, to rescind the resolutions imposing charges on teachers 9 residences, also the reduction of certain salaries, such being found to be illegal. The chairman stated that there were nearly 400 pupils in the seventh standard in the district schools, some nearly eighteen years of age. He considered this must be put a stop to. The matter was deferred. Letters received from the Melanesian Mission yacht Southern Cross state that the vessal reached Norfolk Island from this port on Sept, 5, after a stormy passage of nine days. She was detained at Norfolk Island until Sept. 10, bad weather preventing communication with the island for several days. After the passengers had landed she left Norfolk Island for Melanesia, taking Bishop Wilson and other clergy. . At the annual meeting of the Caledonian Society the report showed an increase of fourteen members. The committee was instructed to further negotiations for amalgamation with the Burns Club. At the Diocesan Synod Mr Templer altered his former motion to the following ;—“ That this Synod respectfully suggests to the Bishop of this provincial church the desirability of making some further modification in the service of the church with a view to ensure greater uniformity in the celebration of those services and of declaring that no variation from that authorised will be allowed in future. 99 Mr Andrews moved as an amendment—" That the modification of services already authorised by resolution of the General Synod in 1871 gives ample latitude, which ought not to be increased. The motion and amendment were put in succession and lost on the voices. The greater portion of the evening sitting was taken up with the consideration of the actuarial report on the pension fund. The Pension Board's report, embodying tnat of the actuary, waa adopted. The first clause stated that the total funds amounted to .£15,680 On Hd, made up as follows; Clergy Sick Pund, ,£7107 4s 6d; Clergy. Pension Fund, £1859 11s lid; Clergy Widows and Orphans 9 Fund, £5113 2a Id; Wnipa Emergency Fund, £303 2b j and Contingent Fund, £1707 sa.
