SPORTING.

[Special to Press Association.] MELBOURNE, Oct. 18. It was a dusty and disagreeable morning at Flemington. Some good mile and a half gallops wore indulged in, Tarcoola, Patron, Solanum, Pilot Boy, Eoyal Master, and Cheaterman performing creditably, the first-named doing as well as anything. Loyalty and Bruin went very sluggishly in strong pacing work. Cravat, Birksgate and Arihi were most prominent amongst tbs two-year-olds. The chief wagers accepted last night were:—. 2000 to 60, Lady Trenton. 2500 to 100, Chestermaa. 1300 to 130, Foxtail. Taasy- was scratched for the Caulfield Cup; oh Oct. 1, and inadvertently left among the list of acceptors.' ■ Steady rain has fallen all day, necessitating the postponement of the Sandown Park races. Martin Burke died of his injuries this morning. At Caulfield this morning Straightfire covered a mile and a half in 2min 40£aec, finishing slovenly. Proceedings csmmenced with Colebeck covering once round at a good sound pace. Impulse followed, galloping a couple of circuits, the latter at a strong rate, attended by Lake shell for" rather over seven furlongs ; Lakeshell was ridden out, but Impulse was going, well within himself at the finish, and, he appears to be a most useful horse. ' Scot Free covered two miles and a half at half and three-quarter speed, and Pegasus negotiated a similar distance steadily, as did Perkin, while Black Cloud and Watchword were associated in a gallop once round, traversing the last five furlongs at a smart pace. Artilleur and Rangefinder were together sent two rounds, and spurted home, and Strathbraan and Barmby strode over a mile fast, both horses moving freely and pulling up undietressed. Au Eevpir galloped a mile and a half at top, attended by Lady Lear over the first part of the journey, and was brought home by Miss Madge. The gallop was a really good one, and Au Eevoir should run well in the Cup should ha keep right until the day of the race. Clanranald covered two rounds at half and three-quarter speed, until the last mile, when he was joined by Kuluine and brought home at top, and his style of going greatly pleased the onlookers, some of whom seem to think his Cup chance a very good one. Barnardo compassed a round at half-pace, and Chainlink cantered a circuit, and afterwards covered the same ground at threepart speed and spurted. King Wai accompanied Golden Fleece in a sharp five-furlong spin, and St John travelled twice round at half pace. Clarence accomplished a steady gallop once round, and Balqaither negotiated a similar distance at a sound pace. Salvo was given good half-pace work twice round, and he is beginning to shape like a racehorse; and Vogengang cantered once round, and then increased tko pace to three-quarter speed up to the seven-furlong post, at which point he was joined by St Louis and brought home at a real good pace. Ahaura was given useful work twice round, as was Crawley, and New Headford and Starling galloped a mile strongly. Justice was treated to good Half-pace work twice round, and Eoyal Eoaa and Three Star travelled six furlongs at top, both horses pulling up fresh and well. Alcestia was merely led on the tan, but Lottie and Eangipuhi were galloped in company over a mile and a quarter, the latter coming home unextended in good lime. Ho is a real good horse, and in fine fettle. Abol Tasman and Dumlop merely cantered, but Beadonwall covered a round and a half at sound half-pace, whan ho was joined by Britomarte and brought home as fast as the latter could bring him. Mechanic did a steady once round, and The Dancer and Coala covered nearly a mile at a strong pace. After breakfast some of the two-year-olda cantered, as did Loveshot; but nothing of importance was done.

and Curragh Steeplechase, to be run at the Canterbury Jockey Club's Spring Meeting, must bo made to-day.
