EDUCATION BOARD.

NORTH CANTERBURY, An ordinary meeting of the North Canterbury Board of Education was held yesterday morning; present—Messrs R. Westeura (chairman), H. W, Peryman, J. Mannings, T. W. Adams and J. Rennie. APPOINTMENTS, &C. Tke following appointments were confirmed ;—Miss Amy J. Alley, teacher, Eyreton; Mr J. Sloane, teacher, Glenroy j Miss Lamb, teacher, Kyle; Mr A, Trevella, assistant, Southbridge. The resignation of Miss Petrie o£ her position as mistress at East Oxford, was accepted, and it was decided to allow her to leave at the end of this month. A letter was received from the Sydenham School Committee, in reference to its refusal to allow a pupil-teacher, Mr H. Amos, leave of absence to go up for the matriculation examination, and stating that when leave of absence to attend the matriculation examination had boon granted to pupil-teachers last year, it had been decided that leave should not be given for that purpose in future, owing to the inconvenience caused to the school. Therefore, the committee had not seen its way to alter its decision with regard to Mr Amos, as it would not have been fair to the other fourth-year pupil-teachers who, in consequence of the committee’s decision, had not prepared for matriculation. At a previous meeting of the Board it had been decided that the whole subject should be considered later on. In order to meet the present case Mr Peryman now moved—“ That the Board is willing to grant Mr Amos leave to go up for the matriculation examination, and that the Sydenham School Committee be informed that if it considers that the school will suffer by his absence a substitute will be provided by the Board at Mr Amos's expense.” The motion was agreed to unanimously. Inspectors’ reports on a number of schools were presented. BUILDINGS COMMITTEE. The Buildings Committee reported that the Hinds School Committee had been asked to give particulars as to fencing required. A bell had been allowed to the French Farm School, on condition that the school committee put it up. The tender of Mr Johnston had been accepted for the leas a of the school reserve at Kowai Bosh. It had been resolved that if Mr Derbidge repaired the school fence at West Lyttelton the Board would pay half the coat. It bad been arranged that Messrs Peryman and Mannings, with the clerk of works, should visit the Phillipatown school and report on tho condition of grounds and roof. A filter had been allowed to the Broadfields school. It had been considered unlikely that funds would permit of any addition to the teacher’s house at Clarkville. It had been decided that no funds were available for a porch at the caretaker's house at Addington. The sum of £5 had been allowed towards repairs at Halkott. The report was adopted. MISCELLANEOUS. A letter was read from the secretary of the Caledonian Society, stating that as the society had decided to grant another scholarship this yo&r he was directed to ask the Board to arrange for the examination of the candidates in the special subjects, Scottish history and literature. The secretary stated that the society accepted the Board’s ordinary examination in other subjects. He had formerly examined the candidates in the special subjects, but was unable to do so again. It was decided to inform the Caledonian Society that it must make its own arrangements for examination in the special subjects. A letter was read from tho Rev A. Blake, requesting the Board to establish an aided school at Clement’s Corner, near Rangitata Bridge. It was decided to obtain further particulars on the matter.

After some matters had been considered in Committee the meeting terminated.
