FIRE AT TEMUKA .

A serious fire occurred at Temuka early on Sunday morning, which resulted in the total destruction of a house and chop lately occupied by Mr C. T. Milner; a shop and workroom in the occupation of Mr J. Tangney, and the shop and show* rooms occupied by Mr Job Brown, who owned all the buildings mentioned. The fire was first observed in Mr Taagney’s back premises by Mr W. Brower, who sleeps over his father’s premises in the main street near, and he at once gave the alarm. The fire had, however, obtained such a hold that although the brigade, under Captain Henry, turned out promptly, little could be done except to prevent the spread of the fire to adjacent blocks. Some few goods were saved from Mr Brown’s premises, but the volunteer salvage corps organised on the spot were Boon too scorched to admit of much being done. For a time the Wallingford Hotel, on the opposite side of the street, was in imminent danger, but fortunately there was little wind, and a few energetic volunteers kept the premises well soaked until danger was over, while the proprietor, Mr Scannell, had baths of water in every bedroom facing the scene of the fire. The origin of the fire is unknown. The insurances are-Mr Tangney’s building, nil ; stock, .£350, Liverpool and London and Globe. Mr Milner’s shop, -2150, New Zealand Insurance Company. Mr Brown’s building, £600; stock; .£2OOO, New Zealand Insurance Company. Mr Brown’s safe, which was built in, was somewhat damaged, and had to be forced open. The books and papers were scorched, but not serioualy damaged.
