[Per Press Association.! DUNEDIN, Oct. 1. George M’Comb has been committed for trial on two charges of forgery. The University Council to-day decided to appoint Mr P. Fitzgerald as temporary lecturer on mining and metallurgy in the School of Mines. With reference to a letter from Apirini Te Ngata, of Auckland, as to the desirability of granting scholarships to Maori and half-caste youths, the council at once and unanimously resolved to agree to the proposal contained in the letter, and to request the Minister of Education to take action in the direction suggested. The following returns from mining companies are reported: Amalgamated Waipori Deep Lead Company, 550 z 16dwts of gold from elevator; Edina Dredge, 16oz of gold for the week; Sew Hoy Big Beach Company, two dredges and elevator, 750 z 6dwta 3grs for the week. A rather unusual and complicated case came before the Stipendiary Magistrate to-day. Judgment was obtained against a female defendant for *69 odd. As the defendant was about to leave, a writ was issued, and the defendant arrested on board the Flora, when she paid the amount as well as the costs. The case came up to-day, when defendant’s counsel intimated that a writ to stay proceedings had been obtained, to ascertain whether the plaintiff could issue execution against a married woman. An adjournment was granted,' to enable this question to be tested.
