[Pbe Pkesb Association. | AUCKLAND, Oct. 1. The Trades and Labour Council is cooperating with the Knights of Labour with the view of getting up a monster petition to the Government relative to the Shop Honrs Bill. At a meeting of the Council, the action of the Government in shelving so many Bills was discussed, particularly those affecting the interests of labour, such as the Eight Hours Bill, the Municipal Amendment Bill, the Coroners Bill and the Juries Bill. After considerable discussion, the Secretary was instructed to forward to the Minister of Labour, a resolution to the effect, " That this Council sincerely regrets the action of the Government in shelving so many Bills this session, especially those affecting the interests of labour.” The Advances to Settlers Bill became a subject of discussion by the Waikato County Council at its monthly meeting, and met with general reprobation as impolitic, unworkable, and likely to lead to corruption. An opinion was expressed that the people of Waikato should take up the matter, and at once petition the Legislative Council to throw the Bill out. There was only one dissentient voice in the meeting, that of Mr Bailey, of Huntley, who thought a County _ Council was travelling beyond its functions in entering upon political matters. Tawhiao’s tangi is now all over, and the Natives have dispersed to their homes. The eldest son of the late Wiremu Tamihaua states that the Natives moat nearly related to the late King Tawhiao, and the members of the Waikato and Ngatimahutu tribes, have borne all the expense of the funeral and tangi. During the meetings many things were settled about various land matters. The Auckland College Council has decided to protest against the proposed Harbour and Education Eeservea Bill. Herman Kehn and Alfred Beehre have been committed for trial by the Kamo Bench on the charge of breaking and entering Whitelaw’s store. The hearing of six other charges was adjourned.
