THE CHARGE OF MANSLAUGHTER.

AUCKLAND. Sept. 17. Beard, who prescribed a half-ounce injection of tobacco for worms, the administering of which caused the death of the boy M’Culliough, and who was found guilty of manslaughter, has been sentenced to six months’ imprisonment, without hard labour, and ordered to pay the costs of tho prosecution. The Judge declined to admit evidence regarding tho successful treatment of other cases by Beard, remarking that he would not advertise the prisoner, and added “A man has only to pretend enough to get others to believe in him.” His Honor also mentioned that the prisoner had practised in other colonies, but not having direct evidence he (the Judge) would not notice the fact in the passing of the sentence. The Court was packed.
