DRAINAGE BOARD.

SPECIAL MEETING. A special meeting of the Drainage Board was held vesterday afternoon; present— Mr J. Deans (chairman), Messrs’H. Crooks, C. Burgess, E. H. Fisher, S. Smart, C. Palairat, H. Bennington and Q. M’lutyro. The meeting was held for the purpose of confirming a resolution, passed at a former meeting, fixing the rates for the year. The resolution was confirmed, and it was decided to send copies to the various local bodies. OEDINAEY MEETING. The ordinary meeting was then held. SECRETARY AND REPORT. Tire Secretary and Treasurer’s report was as follows Amount of rates received since last meeting, £2997 13s 5d 5 received from other sources, £25 9a sd; expenditure since last: meeting, rata account, ,£343 16s Id; amount of 1891 rates outstanding, £7113s 10d; :189a, £2Bs' 6s‘ 6d ; 1893, £211112a 9d j 1893 rates collected to date, £16,896 8s 8d; debit balance, £2670 3s 62. The Secretary further reported that tho opinion of the solicitors had been obtained with regard to the cheque received from the Heathcoto Eoad Board. They had advised that a receipt' cn account should be given to the Eoad Board, and that the matter should bo referred to his Excellency the Governor. This had been done, the Auditor-General had been appointed arbitrator, and tho documents would be sent to Wellington. The report was adopted. engineer's report. The Engineer reported that he had made a minute examination of the bank erected at the Lift at the farm some twelve months ago; and he found that the rats were burrowing through it. It might be found necessary to line the inside channel with a thin layer of good cement concrete. The cost would be about £IBO. The covering in of Ball’s Creek at the mouth of the Ferry Eoad sewer had been satisfactorily completed. Mr Money had signed the deed of easement to the Board for the strip of land occupied by the outfali sewage pipe in E. 5.1148. It would be necessary to ask for a similar deed from the New Brighton Tramway Company. . The report was adopted. CORRESPONDENCE. Correspondence was received and dealt with as follows: Prom the Eicoarton Eoad Board with regard to J 893 rates,’, and asking ioT oertain remissions in the same. This was agreed to. • From Mrs E. Sfcudholme, asking the Board to find an outlet for a natural spring on her property at Monvale. . Mrs Studholme also waited on the Board with reference to this matter. After discussion, it was decided to write to Mrs Studholme, stating that the Board regretted it could not afford her any further relief. Prom Mr W. Boag, asking the Board to take over the Wairarapa Creek. It was decided to take over the stream, and the Enginater was authorised to taka action. *■ From Ms M’Nab, Marshland, drawing the attention of the Board to the unfenced state of the drain at the back of hia property. It was decided to reply that the Board coaid do nothing in the matter. From Mr’ J. Eichardson, forwarding a copy of a resolution passed at a meeting of representatives of local bodies, at which it was resolved to ask a representative of the Drainage Board to attend a future meeting and also to supply information. It was agreed to supply the information required, Prom the Hospital Board, asking permission to extend a culvert for two chains. This.was granted, the work to he subject to the approval of the Engineer. MISCELLANEOUS. The Board decided to write to the Hon W. P. Eeevea with regard to the work done by it for the Government institutions. The Board had under consideration the solicitor’s letter with regard to th© shortage of rates, but no action was taken. Mr Burgess moved, pursuant to notice “ That, as it is probable that the maximum rates leviable by this Board will not, in the near future, be sufficient to defray working expanses, together with interest and sinking fund,.it is expedient that a Bill be promoted transferring the functions of the Drainage Board to the several local bodies within the drainage area, and that such local bodies be requested to support the said Bill.” He requested that the motion might be allowed to stand over for a month. Mr Crooks seconded it pro forma, and it was allowed to stand over. Accounts amounting to £343 16s Id were passed for payment. The meeting then terminated.
