CANTERBURY PROGRESSIVE
LIBERAL ASSOCIATION.
A meeting of the committee was held on Thursday, Mr W. I. Ballinger, President, in the chair, and there was a good attendance of members. The news of the death of Mr C.J. Rae was received with much regret, and the Secretary was instructed to forward a letter of condolence to Mrs Rae. Correspondence was read—Prom the Minister of Justice, acknowledging the receipt of a resolution asking for Some amendment to the existing law which enforces the imprisonment of a person against whom there is no other charge than that he is not in possession of any visible means of support, and stating " that the alteration to sue xaw is tmaer the consideration oi oue Government.” Prom the Auckland Bootmakers’ Union, wishing the Association every success; also from the Christchurch “City Council, acknowledging receipt of letter covering resolution dealing with contracts and wages. Several more names were added to the members’ roll, and the Secretary reported having received a donation to the funds. The Executive was instructed,to make arrangements for a public meeting to discuss the old age pension question. The Labour Committee reported a painful case of distress, also that a large number of artisans were out of employment in Christchurch, with regard to which the committee would make a recommendation to the next meeting of the General Committee.
Mr. John Joyce’s notice of motion at the last meeting of the Lyttelton Harbour Board—" That application ba made to the Government for labour (by prisoners) to ‘face the reclaimed ground at Officer’s I Point, Lyttelton, the Board, undertaking j to provide the cranage appliances”—was upon, and the committee Itrusted that the Board, would' not adopt She suggestion, the Secretary being instructed” to write to the Board to that [effect. 1 It was resolved to endorse the laetion of the Invercargill Town Council in lurging the Government to bring in a Bill mext session enabling local bodies to levy Ifcaxauoa on unimproved values. It was Reported that, on the suggestion of a member of the committee, Mr G. J. Smith, M.H.R., had written to the chief of the ■ Department of Labour, asking that a copy of The Journal of Labour might be supplied -tto the public reading-room, to which a [reply had been received granting the request.
