SCHOOL COMMITTEES.

The monthly meeting of the Wocdend School Committee was held on Monday evening; present—all the members, Mr Judson in the chair. The master’s report, showing an average attendance of 104’2, was received, the very low average being attributed to the recent wet weather. Several accounts wore passed for payment.; Of seventeen applications for the position of pupil-teacher, it was resolved to accept that of Miss E. Parkin. It was resolved to vote for Messrs Anson, Webb and Maxwell as candidates for seats on the Board of Education. The ordinary meeting of the Woolaton School Committee was held on Monday evening; present—Messrs Douglass (chairman), Anderson, Bailey, Cleworth, Edkins, Ewart, Gimblett, and Richardson. An apology was received for the absence of Mr M’Diarmid. The head-master reported the reopening of the school on Feb. 5, with 535. scholars m attendance; that the teachers' were all present, except Mr Kennedy, the third master, who was suffering from an attack of influenza. The pupil teachers had all passed their respective examinations, three of them being in tbe first class. One had also matriculated, and two of the scholars had obtained High School Scholarships. The committee congratulated the head-master on such satisfactory results. It was decided to recommend Miss Lucy Manifold and Miss Christina M’Nial for appointment as pupil teachers in lieu of the two who had gone to the Normal School. As the Board had agreed to the removal of trees, it was decided to call for tenders for their removal, to be in by next meeting. The committee voted for three members for election to the Board of Education. Votes of thanks were ordered to be sent to. Messrs Tanner and Joycs, M.H.R.’s, Mrs Gosset, Mrs Douglass, Miss Bradbury, and Mr Coles for assistance rendered in connection with tbe distribution of prizes. Owing to the large number of scholars desiring to attend the Scripture lessons the services of the Rev A. Mitchell to assist the Rev T. ; Nott in the classes was. accepted with thanks. Accounts to the amount ot £7 4s 9d were passed for payment, leaving -outstanding liabilities of £7 9a, ... .

A meeting of the West Lyttelton School Committee was held on Tuesday evening; present—Captain Willis (in the chair), Messrs Webb, Arnold, Gordon, Baker and tbe Rev E. E. Chambers. An apology was received for the absence of Mr Ashley. The acting-master, Mr Douds, reported that for tbe last week the numbers attending the school were 137, with 160 on the roll. It was decided to ask the Board of Education to visit the school as soon as possible in order that some needed alterations could be put in hand. It was resolved that Miss Kennedy’s resignation, to take effect from the end of March, be received with regret, and that the committee wished to place upon record its appreciation of her capable and faithful duties since the opening of the school. It was decided to recommend Miss Newton to the Board of Education for appointment as pupil teacher. The petition from householders in Lyttelton, which hsd been sent to the Board of Education protesting against the boundaries, was received, and it was resolved to inform the Board that the Committee had no recommendation to make in the matter, and considered the Board should define the boundaries. The Committee decided to vote for Messrs Montgomery, Anson and Mannings as members of the Board of Education.
