CHRISTCHURCH. Friday, Jan. 26. (Before Messrs J. P. Jameson, H. Thomson, and W. Barnett, J.F.’s.) Drunkenness. —A first offender was fined ob and costs, in default twenty-four hours' imprisonment. Setting Fire to Gorse. —Alfred Pitzhenry and Thomas Curtiee, two lads, were charged with having, on Jan. 10, set fire to gorse within sixty feet of the road in Gloucester street, Linwood. Both boys admitted the offence. Inspector Broham said that, on the date in question, the boys started a fire in a quantity of gorse at Linwood. The fire engines turned out, and, after a good deal of trouble, the fire was extinguished before any serious damage was done. Their Worships severely cautioned the boys, and said they were liable to a penalty of -£lO or three months’ imprisonment. As this was their first offence, they would be fined 10s each, with costs 7a each. Throwing Stones. —James Bridges, a boy of fifteen, was fined 5a and costs for throwing stones in Colombo street, Sydenham, on Deo. 15. Removing a Gate.— -George Bradford, Frederick Cummings, Albert Phillips, David Dann. John Machin, John Hyland, Thomas Greig, Hugh Riley and William Thomas, nine youths, were charged with having, on Deo. 31, removed a gate from the premises of William Simpson, Kilmore Street east. The gate was valued at £2. All the defendants denied the charge. After hearing the evidence of_ two boys, named Clements and Staniland, and Detective Benjamin, the Bench convicted and discharged all the defendants. Herding Cattle.— Harry Bliss, for whom Mr Harris appeared, was fined 15s and costs for herding .fifteen head of cattle on the New Brighton Road on Jan. 15. ASHBURTON. Friday, Jan. 26. (Before MrR. Alcorn, J.P.) Drunkenness. Two first _ offenders were cautioned, convicted and discharged.
