An inquiry of more than usual interest lias been opened before the Board of’ Education into charges preferred by Mrj Selby, chief assistant teacher at thei Devonport school, against Mr Benge, the* head-master, whom ha averred had dona certain things, such as giving some of the children a second chance of answering questions put to them, and telling them how to answer them, at the examination held in September last. The reply was that the allegations were made in retalia-' tion. The importance attaching to the case in the eyes of those directly in-tereated—-the Board and both parties concerned—was evidenced by the fact that all three were represented fay counsel. By the present outlook the inquiry will probably last into next week. Sir George Grey leaves to-morrow for Rotorua. Go has suffered from bronchitis lately. He has received numerous requests during the past month to visit places throughout the colony to address Eublic meetings, but the state of his ealth has obliged him reluctantly to decline.

William Bennett, of Newmarket, contractor, has been committed for trial for a breach of the Bankruptcy Act in uqlawfally failing to keep proper books. Bail was allowed, himself in £IOO and two sureties of £SO. The enrolment of names to vote at the licensing elections in March next has commenced. Six hundred names have been handed in, it is stated principally of those interested in the trade, by one person, for Auckland city. The Burns anniversary was celebrated with iclai by the Auckland Burns Club.
