David Miller, one of the pioneer settlers of the province, who represented Port Chalmers in the first Provincial Council, died last night j aged seventy-three. He. introduced the first steamer into Otago. The Surveyors’ Institute has discussed the advisability of adopting a general scale of charges for the colony, and decided to work on the different scales now established. General regret was expressed that the Surveyors’Bill did not become law, but it was stated that steps were now being taken by the SurveyorGeneral to establish a uniform system of examination.

The bot-fly is very prevalent in the Palmerston district.
