ROAD BOARDS.

AVON. The ordinary meeting of this board was held oaDoc. 11; present—Mcsars 0. Burgess (in the chair), Dunlop and Horner. An apology for the absence of Mr Nicholla was received.—Letters were read —From Mr Ueslur, district engineer, relative to a road over which the city and suburban tram line passes. Mr Kennedy, of the Public Worts Department, and the clerk to impact and report.—Prom MrW. Reese, relative to the state of Bottle Lake road. To be repaired.—From Mr John Anderson, Rangiota, asking for a trial cf his etonegathering machine. Not entertained. —Mr G. P. Williams, G.E., reported tho completion of No. 3 contract at New Brighton, and recommended final payment. —The surveyor’s report was read and ap-proved.—-The finance report showed rates paid during the month as follows; — District £232 14s 6d, drainage £157 18s 4d, Waimakariri .£l7 Gs 6d, charitable aid £SO 9s‘ 6d, Now Brighton loan .£3B 9s Hd, sundries £5 18s sd. Tho ordinary account was in debit £lO3 19 1 6d, and the loan account in me fit £230 17s 43. The rates collected for other local bodies were ordered to be paid over, and accounts and wages amounting to £loll3o 8d were passed for payment. The sum of £lO as a first instalment was voted for the purchase of small birds’ heads and eggs.—Payments amounting to £7l 5s oa the loan account were passed.—Orders were given to recover rates from certain trustees if not paid within one - month.—Notices for grubbing gorso and trimming fences were ordered to be served.—lt was resolved that a fence should be put up adjoining Dudley Creak bridge, and the Tramway Company charged with the cost.—lt was agreed that a pips should be put under the road near Dingle's* gate, and several other works wore ordered.—After urging the early collection of outstanding rates the meeting terminated. RICCARTON. The ordinary meeting of this Board was held oa Monday at the office, Fendslton; present—Messrs Hall (chairman). Nunweek, Feather, Boag and Jackson. —The following correspondence was read—Prom the Avon Rond Board, agreeing to contribute one half the cost of making a footpath on the North Road from Ratcliff Road to the railway line. The board directed tho surveyor to proceed with the work. From Mr H. P. Reece, requesting permission to lay pipes under the Clyde Road for drainage purposes. Granted conditionally.—Prom Mr Gerard, asking permission to take a few loads of gravel for repairs to roads at Willowbank. It was resolved to grant the request, the gravel to bo taken from the Middleton reserve.—From Messrs "Garrick and Co., regarding tram lino on Lincoln Road. The Clerk said there was no reply from the Spreydon Road Board to the board’s resolution suggesting the north side of tho Lincoln Road for the tram line. The board consequently inferred that, the Spreydon Board would agree to grant tho concession on the north side, as par resolution.—From the Drainage Board, in reply, agreeing to give the necessary pipes for the Bryndwr drainage provided a deed of easement was obtained for tho land required, and that the Road Board will undertake farther maintenance. Tho beard declined to undertake the maintec ar-co until levels wore submitted, and the matter was referred to the surveyor.— Tenders wore received for 250yds of boulders, aud that of Mr J. Corboy was accepted.—The surveyor's report on works in progress was read and adopted, and the following resolutions were carried:—“ That a concrete culvert, with a ford at the eastern side, be constructed on Hi ghetod’s Road, over the Styx drain.” “That the old timber culvert on the Bush Inn Road be replaced by 18in pipes.”—The ratecollector’s report showed a large amount of rates outstanding for so lata a period cf the year. The report was approved, and the collector was instructed accordingly. •arnswamM MANDEVILLE AND EANGIOSA. Tho monthly, meeting of this' board was held on Dec. 8; present—Messrs M. Maalarlano '(chairman), J. 3. Moody, J. Stalker and G. "Wallace.—lt was decided to take the necessary stops to acquire land asked for by Messrs G. Edwards and others, under the .Public Works Act, for tho purpose of making an outlet for the drain into Saltwater Creek. A request from Mr A. "Wallace for permission to take soil from the side cf a read was granted.—lt was resolved that the Board should psy £3 5s 7d, half cost of repairs to Smith street, Kaiapoi, at tha same time pointing out that the Board did not consider itself liable for any repairs to the foorpath; and further, with regard to the diaiu on the Beach road—“ 1 hat the Board did not recogaiao any claim for drainage works as shown in its letter of June 21.”—Regarding the culvert at Beach Rond, it waa decided to take steps to prevent scour.—lnstructions was given tc patch Busch’s road and to clean out the Little Ashley.—lt was decided to ask Messrs Pearson aud S&nsom -to remove willows growing near pipes across the River Marsh road, the roots beveg considered a sfuisacce.—-Accounts amounting to £l9 7s lid were passed for payment. KOWAI. The monthly meeting of this board was held on Dsc. 7; present Messrs J. Mathers, T. H. Evan*, B. Bribtow and H. Mahler. Mr E. Bristow was voted to the chair.—Accounts amounting to £126 Is 5d were passed for payment.—The receipts since lest meeting were reported to have been £lOl 6s 7d.~The tends r of Mr B. Dobaon for forming twenty chains of road near Morten’s, and that of Air H. Gorrie for supplying shingle for repairs to Seiton Reserve-.read were accepted.—Correspondence.was rend—From the r,evident engineer of working railway;/, regarding tha proposed footbridge to bo attached to the railway bridge over Stoney Creek, and stating " that the work would be pat ia hand with ai little delay as possible.—From Ur C. ft. Pemberton, stating that Mr Buss was willing to convey a piece of laud to the hoard for the purposes of a drain through E.S, 6488. Should the drain pass through a road laid off to go to the brewery property, tile board would havo te pu: a provision in tho deed that Mr Buss could use the road when hi wished to do so. This was agreed to by tbs Board.—From Mr E. E. Good, actmg-coroner, stating that he had been requested by the jury of an inquest held oa Nov. 80 to draw attention to the dangerous state cf Saltwater Creek near to where it joins tha Ashley, aud to ask the board to outsider the advisableness of putting up a notice warning persons cf the danger. Tbe letter was ordered to be acknowledged, sad the board expressed its opinion that it would ba of vary little service to put up a notica at this particular place, aa the river waa liable to shifiiits course at any time,— From the Charitable Aid Board, requesting that hatter provision than hitherto might be made for payment of the contribution duo to the Charitable Aid Board, end suggesting that the practice adopted by some of the contributory local authorities, o’ remitting monthly instalments, might be followed by the board. It was decided to forward a cheque for £SO on account.—lt was derided t out the ranger should receive notice that his services would not be required after Jan. 4. It was resolved to invito applications for the position, to be seat ia for the next meeting.—Mr T. James asked if tho board would grant assistance towards constructing protective worts oa tho south side of the Kowai, near Leithtield. He stated that ho had been promised contributions from several of tbe persona interested. —It was decided that members should meet on the ground and decide on what was bees to bo done.—The offer of Mr T. James to sell one acre of land, part of Reserve 89, for a gravel pit was accepted.—Tbe clerk’s report was read and considered. Several matters were ordered to be attended to, and the meeting terminated.
