SWEATING.
TO THE EDITOR. Sib, —■ Your correspondent Andrew Davidson points to an almost impossible solution of the sweating evil in the tailoring trade—viz., a Workers’ Co-operative Association. He must ba aware that cooperative associations are run on the very cheap labour ticket. Just take the case of working men getting their orders made up on the chart system in factories. No tailors’ co-operative could be run on the fairtrade principle at present without the sweating system being introduced. The commercial men, clergymen, lawyers, doctors, squatters, &c., all have a desire to obtain a bargain. It ia immaterial to them who it is “sweated” by so long as it is cheap. Can bond fide journeymen (not 30s a week boys) afford to make up suits at £2 10s and £3 los ? I don’t think the tailors have any desire to away the employers by letters to the papers, but they are thankful that such an opportunity is allowed them to-day. Some employers take exposure badly when their little “ methods ” leak out.—l am, &e., ASSISTANT SWEATER,
