SELWYN COUNTY COUNCIL.
An ordinary meeting o£ the Selwyn County Council was held yesterday; present—Messrs H. W. Peryman, T. H. Anson, W, Boag, E. Weatenra, J. G. Murray, W. Dunlop and J. Eennie, In the absence of Mr D. M’Millan, who sent an apology, Mr Peryman was voted to the chair. chairman's statement. The Chairman stated that since last meeting the following correspondence bad been received - From the Auditor-General forwarding the audited accounts. Prom the South Malvern Eoad Board, asking for a, grant to repair afoot-bridge over the Kowai. Prom the Eakaia Eoad Board, recommending the painting of the Coalgate Bridge. Prom the Avon Eoad Board in reference to the supervision o£ White’s bridge. Prom the Charitable Aid Board, suggesting the payment of contributions by monthly instalments. Prom the Ellesmere Eoad Board, forwarding estimates of cost of a new bridge over the Selwyn at Ellesmere. Prom the Halswell Drainage Committee, reporting on proposed works at the canal. Prom Mr Deeming, in reference to the road from Whitecliffa railway station to the coal mine. Prom the Heathcote Eoad Board, regarding the condition of Dyer’s Pass road. From the Minister for Lands, concerning a proposed exchange of lands for plantation purposes. The reports on the water races and plantations had also been received. MISCELIANEOUS. It was decided to reply to the South Malvern and Eakaia Eoad Boards that the Council bad no funds at present to carry out the works proposed, hat if the Boards chose to undertake them, the Council would pay the cost when funds were available. The request of the Avon Eoad Board that their Clerk should be allowed to supervise the work at White’s bridge, was granted. > The Charitable Aid Board’s letter was referred to the Finance Committee, The Ellesmere Eoad Board’s letter regarding a new bridge over the Selwyn was also referred to the Finance Committee. It was resolved to adopt the Halswell Drainage Committee’s report, tenders to be in by Deo. 27. Mr Murray mentioned that some time ago the Government had promised to set apart some land in order to create a fund for the letting out of Lake Ellesmere, but nothing further had been heard of the matter. It was therefore resolved to write to the Government asking if the land would be vested in the Council, also whether the ,£730 granted some time ago was still open for application. ' It was decided to communicate with the Government, drawing its attention to the necessity of taking action with regard to the road from the Whitecliffa station to the coal mine. The Heathcote Eoad Board’s letters were deferred for consideration. After dealing with water-race and plantation matters at considerable length, the meeting terminated!
