The ship Hinemoa, which arrived off Lyttelton Heads oa Thursday afternoon from London, vi& Otago Heads, for orders, made the passage from London to her present anchorage, including some little time loat off Otago, in tho excellent time of . seventy-six days. She experienced severe gales across tho Southern Ocean, arid, during one of the galea, she passed a painted port vessel hove to, which Captain de Steiger thinks was Shaw, Savill and Albion Company’s Hermioao, now overdue from London to this port. The Hinemoa was at that time running under lower canvas. She was ia ballast, and was thus able to keep before the wind, while the deeply-laden vessel would have to heave to. It is not yob decided whether the Hinemoa will come to Lyttelton or proceed to another port to load, ... Tho barque Carlisle Castle arrived in Fort yesterday morning from Capetown In ballast, to load wool, &o„ for the Now Zealand Shipping Company. She belonged to the well-known “Green” line until quite recently, when she was purchased by the present commander. Captain Robinson. Tho vessel loft Capetown on Oot, 32, and experienced several severe blows ucroas the Southern Ocean, ihc meridian of Tasmania was passed on Nov. 28, and tho Snares sighted on Deo. 1. She arrived off Otago Heads on Sunday last, and was ordered to proceed to this port to load. A strong southerly gale was encountered along the coast and took tno vessel some distance to tho northward of the port. During the galo sho carried away her fore topsoil. Captain Robin sen is accompanied by his wife and family. THE S.S. TASMANIA. Yesterday morning tho steamer Tas- ; mania, of Messrs Huddort, Parker and Co.’s fleet, arrived in Port from Sydney, via Auckland and way ports. Sho is tho pioneer boat of the new fleet oc steamers which that Company proposes tunning in the trade between this Colony and Australia. Sbeia cynow vessel, having bee!

launched only eighteen months ago from the yards of Messrs Swan and Hunter, Newoestle-on-Tyne, and in appearance ia very similar to tho Warrimoo and Miowera, which were engaged in this trade some little lime ago. She is fitted up in a most luxurious manner, and ohould prove a great favourite with the travelling public. The Ealoon ia situated aft, and contains berths for one hundred and two passengers. The state-rooms are large, well lighted and ventilated, and are provided with all tho appointments to bo found on the best passenger steamers engaged in tho trade. Tho steerage apartment is right forward, and ia also very comfortable quarters, there being berthing space for one hundred and fifty passengers. A very comfortable smoking-room, tho walls of which are of maiblo inlaid with gold work, is to be fouud on the upper deck. Tho vessel is supplied with electric light throughout. The engines, which are constructed on the triple expansion principle, were bmlt by the Wallsend Shipping Company, of Newcastle. They are capable of driving the steamer at a speed of 14-i knots per hour on a moderate consumption of coal. Ihe vessel laaa proved herself an admirable flea boat, and, should she remain in the trade, will no doubt soon become popular with the travelling public. It is the intention of her owners to bring another vessel, the Elia garni te, into the intercolonial trade if tho Tasmania meets with sufficient patronage, while tho arrangements also include urovieiona for a coastal boat—the Tambo, a vessel of 405 tons register. The Tasmania is in command of Captain Thomas M’Geo, late of the Union Steamship Company’s fleet, while Mr Muir ia chief officer, Mr Willcocks stcond and Mr Jamieson third. . Mr Cocks is chief 'engineer, Mr Haatnell second, Mr Clarke third. Mr W. Cailera occupies the post of purser, and Mr C. Henderson is chief steward. The steamer left for northern ports sad Auckland last night.
