SCHOOL COMMITTEES.
The usual monthly meeting of the Sydenham School Committee was held! on Deo. 5; present—Messrs E. Jones (Chairman), ,W. Breiv, J. Forrester, W. Herezell, P. C. Hall, W. H, Meikleham : and S. Wilson. A deputation from the teaching staff reported that the net proceeds from the concert would amount to more than JBSO. It was agreed that this amonnt and the £l9 in hand from last year shonld be expended in the purchase of attendance and merit prizes. It was decided that the prizes should be distributed by the Chairman on Friday, Dec. 22, on which date the school would break up for the Christmas holidays. The Committee congratulated the teachers on the very great success attending their efforts in connection with the concerts. The headmaster reported the number on the: roll to be 1220, average attendance 1064,and highest attendance 1114. A letter was received from the Board of Education advising that it intended to revise the scale of salaries, and that the Committee's suggestion with regard to any redaction to be made upon a falling-off of attendance would be duly considered. A long discussion took place concerning the inequality in salary, between mole and female teachers, and it was resolved—- “ That the' Committee begs to bring before the Board the great inequality in salary between mala and female teachers and respectfully asks the Board •to take into consideration the advisability of revising the scale of salaries.”- A motion by Mr Hall, seconded by Mr, Brew—“ That the school be worked as a mixed school after the Christmas holidays "—was lost, ' the ; majority of the Committee, being of opinion that it was a matter that should be settled at the annual meeting of householders rather than by the Committee. , - •‘ l . The usual . monthly meeting of the Papanui School Committe was held on Monday evening; preßcat-vMeasrs P; Hudson, E. Jones, H. Dercetfc."D. Bantin, W. Pres, E. Morgan, W. J. Jackson add A, J. Thwaites. The master's report showed an, average attendance of 224 for the month, of • November, the average for ’ the . past quarter’, being 232. It was, decided to distribute the prizes at the schoolhoase on Thursday, Deo. 14, at 2,30 p.m. After the prizes have been given, the school will break up for the usual five weeks’ holidays. . .
