A TERRIBLE EXPERIENCE. [Special to Press Association] BRISBANE, Dec. 6. Several members of the crew of the lugger Goshawk floated on the hatches for two days and nights, while two others underwent a similar experience for three days and nights. On the arrival of the goods train from Balclutha at eleven o’clock, those on. the engine felt it pass over something at Fish's landing, opposite the Police Station, and, on search being made, the remains of a man,horribly mangled, were found on the rails. Death mu~t have been instantaneous. The man's name is William Roach. He had been committed for trial on a charge of housebreaking in Dunedin, but the Grand Jury yesterday threw out the bill. He was released from gaol about 3 p.m,, the 1 authorities giving him 4a 6d. When the body was found there was Is 3d in the pocket. Ha is supposed to have spent the balance in drink. EEEPTON, Dec. 5. Mr George Courtenay was drowned lest evening in attempting to cross the Inangahus River at the junction lord. His wife was in the trap at the time, but was rescued, Conrtenay disappearing from sight almost at once. The deceased was a very old settler, and general regret is felt at hia loss. An inquest was held at Temuka on Tuesday, touching the de?jth of David John M'Gimpeey, who met with an accident at the Pakihi estate on Monday last. The evidence bore out the statement published yesterday, and the jury retamed a verdict of “ Accidental death.”
