THE AUSTRALIAN TEAM. [Special to Press association.] LONDON, July 24. The match between the Australians and Middlesex Eleven began at Lord’s to-day. The County team comprised Lucas, West, Cornish, Westhorp, Phillips, Ford, Rawlin, J. Hearne, O’Brien, Douglas and Scott. W. Giffen, Jarvis and Coningham stand out of the Colonial team. Stoddart having injured his leg was unable to take part in the match. The Australians in their first innings scored 147 runs. Blackham 42 and Trumble not 61 were the highest scorers. Lyons, Giffen, Bannerman and Gregory were all dismissed without scoring, and the first five wickets fell with only 26 runs on the sheet. Hearne’a bowling was almost unplayable, and he took three wickets for five runs. The Middlesex team was all disposed of for 78 runs in the first innings. The weather was fine, but the wicket was heavy from the recent rains. The other scorers on the Australian aide were Trott 14, Bruce 12, Graham 12. Hearne took in all seven wickets for 58 runs; Rawlin secured Wo for 61. The principal scorers in the first innings of the County team were—-Douglas 12, Ford 14, O’Biien 13, West not out 13, Hearne 18. Turner took six wickets for 30 runs, and Trumble fourfor S 7; they were almost unplayable. The Australiana went in again at the close of the day, and ran up 144 for the loss of three wickers, so that they now have a lead of 213, with seven wickets to fall. Lyons made 51, Giffen 14, Trott 52 not out, Trumble 24 not out. Lyons hit grandly. One straight drive of his sent the ball clean over the stand, and was the biggest hit ever seen on the ground. Trott and Trumble both scored very freely off the rather weak Middlesex bowling. The 144 were put up in ninety-two minutes. July 25. Hewitt, one of the leading gentlemen cricketers of England, has resigned his connection with the Somerset County team. He is disgusted at their clamouring against the action of and he has quarrelled with Palairet, the Oxford captain, who is also a prominent Somerset cricketer.
